Some more thoughts on medication
If medication appears to be an option as an adjunct to living better, Susan Eby takes great care in finding exactly which medication will best assist you. It is imperative to avoid negative side effects and any over-medicating. Luckily we have more medications available in psychiatry than ever before, many with fewer side effects than their predecessors.
Most often, after getting to know your situation, she will describe in detail which
medications might help, and why. She will provide you with objective information regarding a specific medication, answering any questions or doubts that you have along the way. At this point, your personal preferences will largely guide the final decision.
Medication requires a partnership between the individual and the clinician. At Access Psychiatry, the policy is to provide a detailed treatment plan of care, incorporating your views and attitudes, your history with medication, and your overall health. The plan will describe the purpose, the levels, and the expected outcomes. The plan will include expectations for your participation and methods to communicate your status, any unexpected side effects, and the capacity to adjust the plan promptly.
Additional information about medications can be found via the National Alliance on Mental Illness (www.nami.org) and the National Library of Medicine www.nlm.nih.gov).
